Selecting History as an Optional Subject – All that UPSC aspirants need to know

Your decision of selecting an optional subject will play a very crucial part in the overall performance during the civil service examination. You should choose an optional subject only when you are sure that you will be able to cover the syllabus wholly including the general studies related to it. As a UPSC aspirant, you should opt for History as an optional subject only based on your interest as you would have to read it for the approaching one to one and a half year. It is important to develop a zeal to dig into the subject by reading as many sources as possible. Apart from reading books and history optional notes, it is also important to learn and retain them. You should consider History a very scientific, objective and analytical subject as it requires you to frame the answers based on historical facts and records. Hence, it is important to spare yourself the misconception that says scoring in history is very difficult.
